Former President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf has expressed her support for Liberia’s diplomatic efforts to secure a United Nations Security Council seat. This follows the country’s official response, delivered by Minister of Foreign Affairs Sara Beysolow Nyanti, to the African Union’s Committee of Ten (C-10) report on UN Security Council reform.
The C-10, under the leadership of Sierra Leone’s President Dr. Julius Maada Bio, presented its findings during the 38th Session of the African Union Summit in Addis Ababa.
President Sirleaf commended Liberia’s firm stance and diplomatic engagement in promoting Africa’s unified position on UN Security Council reform.
In her statement, Minister Beysolow Nyanti emphasized Liberia’s long-standing commitment to multilateralism and its dedication to enhancing Africa’s influence in global decision-making. She stressed the importance of Africa presenting a united front on this critical issue and called for continued solidarity among AU member states.
Sirleaf urged that Africa must remain determined in securing permanent representation at the Security Council, noting that Liberia’s advocacy strengthens the continent’s demand for a fairer global governance system. She concluded by congratulating the Minister of Foreign Affairs.
Liberia’s actions at the AU Summit are part of its broader initiative to secure a non-permanent seat on the Security Council, highlighting its leadership role in peace, security, and global diplomacy.
The country is committed to collaborating with regional and international partners to advance the AU’s common position as outlined in both the Ezulwini Consensus and the Sirte Declaration.
