ECOWAS Vice President underscores women’s role in peacebuilding at Kinshasa congress

The Vice President of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), Her Excellency Damtien L. Tchintchibidja, attended the International Congress on Conflict Mediation and Peace Building in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), on July 16 and 17, 2024. Organized by the Women for Africa Foundation and the United Nations Alliance for Civilizations, the event emphasized women’s crucial role in peacebuilding.

Vice President Tchintchibidja delivered a keynote address, stressing the indispensable role of women in peacebuilding efforts. She highlighted how mediation processes led by women have consistently resulted in more sustainable and comprehensive peace agreements. “Mrs. Tchintchibidja’s advocacy for gender-inclusive approaches resonated throughout the congress,” setting a proactive tone for the event.

The congress featured discussions on women’s mediation roles, national experiences, and best practices. Among the distinguished attendees were the Congolese Ministers of Gender Family and Children Affairs, Humanitarian Affairs, International Cooperation and Francophonie as well as Prof. Fatou Sow Sarr, ECOWAS Commissioner for Human Development and Social Affairs who was a panelist on Governments, CSOs and Multilateral Organisations’ Support to the Action of Female Mediators. ECOWAS Commission will continue to share its experience while learning with other Regional Economic Communities (RECs).

Vice President Tchintchibidja’s participation at the Kinshasa congress highlighted ECOWAS’ commitment to gender equality in peace and security. Her stance has set the stage for advancing women’s roles in peacebuilding across the region, promising a more inclusive approach to conflict resolution.
