ECOWAS Commission

Vice President

Edward Singhatey has encouraged journalists from the West African region to be mindful of the
link between stability, economic development and integration when reporting ECOWAS
news and events across the region.

The meeting between Singhatey and the media
was held May 31 in Abuja, Nigeria. The young media practitioners who were selected
to attend the interactive session were also in attendance at the “Get to Know
ECOWAS” program hosted by the ECOWAS Commission. Singhatey stressed the
importance of trans-national issues of the coexisting states and challenged the
journalists to be more aggressive when reporting the regional organization’s integration
agenda.

The journalists were made privy to the strides being made by ECOWAS and the new programs that are preparing for launch that
will focus on effective integration. Singhatey
provided examples such as the ECOWAS biometric card system, trans-national road
and rail infrastructure, trade liberalization and better cooperation between adjoining
states.

Singhatey then answered questions from reporters about the
process of how cases are brought to the ECOWAS court of justice, institutional
reforms, ECOWAS’ intervention in times of political turmoil, poverty reducing programs
and developmental partner collaborations.
