The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the United Nations Office for West Africa and the Sahel (UNOWAS) have issued a joint statement following their high-level political mission to Guinea-Bissau. The visit aimed to assess the political situation in the country.

The delegation was led by Mr. Mohamed Ibn Chambas, Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for West Africa and the Sahel, and Dr. Omar Alieu Touray, President of the ECOWAS Commission. They met with various stakeholders including government officials, opposition leaders, and representatives from civil society organizations.

“During our visit, we engaged in constructive discussions with all parties involved,” said Mr. Chambas. “Our primary objective is to support Guinea-Bissau in its efforts towards achieving lasting peace and stability.”

Dr. Touray emphasized ECOWAS’s commitment to promoting democracy in Guinea-Bissau: “We stand ready to assist the government and people of Guinea-Bissau in overcoming their challenges.”

The mission comes at a critical time as Guinea-Bissau faces ongoing political tensions. The ECOWAS-UNOWAS team stressed the importance of dialogue among all parties as a means to resolve disputes peacefully.

“We encourage continued cooperation between national actors,” added Mr. Chambas, highlighting that international partners remain supportive of efforts aimed at ensuring democratic governance in Guinea-Bissau.

The delegation reiterated its commitment to working closely with local authorities to address pressing issues facing the nation.
