Ambassador Amadou Diongue, the ECOWAS Resident Representative in Benin, recently visited Mr. Sacca Lafia, President of the Autonomous National Electoral Commission (CENA) of the Republic of Benin. This meeting at CENA’s headquarters in Cotonou served as a platform for exchanging New Year greetings and discussing the upcoming 2026 general elections in Benin.

The dialogue highlighted the significance of proactive engagement and collaboration to ensure a free, fair, and transparent electoral process. The ECOWAS representative reiterated the organization’s commitment to supporting Benin’s government in its election preparations. He emphasized ECOWAS’s dedication to assisting Benin in conducting smooth elections while respecting the legal framework. This reflects ECOWAS’s determination to enhance democratic institutions and processes within its member states.

Discussions between Ambassador Diongue and President Lafia addressed specific challenges and opportunities related to electoral preparations. They considered potential areas for collaboration, such as technical assistance, capacity building, and logistical support, aiming to strengthen CENA’s ability to organize credible and inclusive elections.
