The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) recently held a meeting in Lomé, Togo, from November 18 to 21, 2025, to address the implementation of its Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) immersion program. The event was organized by the ECOWAS Department of Human Development and Social Affairs through its Directorate of Education, Science and Culture.

The gathering brought together TVET focal points from ECOWAS member states as well as other stakeholders in vocational education. Participants discussed the orientation, methodology, and follow-up actions required to improve outcomes for the regional program.

Technical Vocational Education and Training is considered crucial for building human capital and enhancing job prospects for young people in West Africa. The region’s labor market is evolving due to digitalization, energy transitions, and new industrial needs. As a result, aligning training provided at TVET institutions with industry demands has become increasingly important. Industrial internships are seen as a key tool in connecting graduates with employers.

ECOWAS has developed this immersion program so that young TVET graduates can gain hands-on experience within industries across member states. This approach aims to help youth acquire practical skills directly applicable in their careers. However, initial assessments have revealed challenges such as implementation difficulties, limited participation by some member countries, and insufficient communication between ECOWAS and certain states.

According to organizers: “The objective of the immersion program is to offer young TVET graduates practical experiences in relevant industries, bridging the gap between TVET education and the needs of the labour market in West Africa, which dovetail in producing relevant skills and empowering youths for employability in line with the ECOWAS Vision 2050.”

The recent meeting focused on presenting and validating key documents necessary for rolling out the immersion initiative more effectively. Organizers stated: “The presentation and adoption of the key documents on the implementation of the immersion program for young TVET graduates in industries is a strategic step towards achieving its objectives. The results of the meeting will serve as a solid basis for the effective implementation of the program with a view to ensuring a robust and sustainable ECOWAS TVET immersion program in industries.”
