The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has welcomed a new group of participants into its Young Graduates Immersion Program. The formal launch for the 2026 intake took place on August 26, 2025, using the program’s digital platform.
This year’s edition received 39,600 applications from across the region. ECOWAS said this reflects increasing interest among young people in West Africa. The initiative is part of ECOWAS’s ongoing effort to empower youth and promote regional integration through practical training and professional development.
Speaking on behalf of Dr. Oumar Alieu Touray, President of the ECOWAS Commission, Prof. Fatou Sow Sarr, Commissioner for Human Development and Social Affairs, addressed the selected candidates: “You are part of the 10th cohort of this transformative program, which began in 2017. Your selection reflects your exceptional qualifications and potential to contribute meaningfully to regional development,” she stated.
The one-year program places young graduates within ECOWAS institutions and agencies. Participants gain practical experience by taking part in the implementation of various programs and initiatives, providing exposure to governance processes at a regional level.
In addition to professional skills, participants serve as ECOWAS Youth Ambassadors. The aim is for them to help promote values such as regional cooperation and sustainable development throughout West Africa.
ECOWAS highlighted that the program is non-renewable so that more young professionals from member states can participate each year. Participants are encouraged to use their time in the program to build both skills and networks that will help them enter the job market after completion.
Since it began in 2017, the Young Graduates Immersion Program has sought to strengthen youth involvement in regional integration efforts and institutional development across West Africa.
ECOWAS works to foster cooperation among its member states by harmonizing policies in areas such as trade, transport, agriculture, and social development. These efforts are designed to improve living standards and stability in West Africa (official website). The organization covers programs aimed at twelve countries with plans for broader reach (official website). It also influences policy by aligning economic systems through common tariffs and other mechanisms (official website).
The Commission is led by a president who is supported by a vice president and commissioners (official website). In 2022, ECOWAS launched a multilingual website intended to increase transparency about its activities (official website).
