The ECOWAS Commission has launched a new project aimed at supporting six of its member states in implementing the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). The project, titled “Institutional Support to ECOWAS Commission for Effective Implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) by ECOWAS Vulnerable States,” was officially initiated during an inception and first steering committee meeting held virtually on August 6, 2025.

The initiative targets The Gambia, Guinea, Guinea Bissau, Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Togo. Its main goal is to strengthen both national and regional institutional capacities to ensure that these countries can effectively and inclusively implement AfCFTA provisions.

Key stakeholders participated in the meeting, including representatives from the ECOWAS Commission, national governments of beneficiary countries, UNDP Regional and Country Offices, and the African Development Bank (AfDB). Participants discussed project objectives, expected outputs, planned activities, and clarified roles for all involved parties. The session also allowed for feedback from each country and collaborative planning for next steps.

Mrs. Massandjé Toure-Litsé, ECOWAS Commissioner for Economic Affairs and Agriculture, opened the meeting by acknowledging AfDB’s financial support and UNDP’s technical partnership. She stated: “She emphasized the central role of country-level ownership and participation, calling on national stakeholders to fully commit to the project’s implementation in order to achieve measurable impact.”

Speaking on behalf of Mr. Lamin Barrow from AfDB’s West Africa Regional Office, Dr. Joseph Rideberio reaffirmed the bank’s commitment: “He reiterated the Bank’s dedication to providing both financial and technical assistance to ensure the successful implementation of the AfCFTA in the ECOWAS region and beyond.”

Mr. Isiyaka Sabo of UNDP highlighted current global trade challenges: “He highlighted that strengthening regional trade systems is key to boosting resilience and sustainable growth across the continent.”

Representatives from participating countries expressed support for the initiative. They stressed its importance in line with their national priorities and pledged full cooperation for effective execution.

Mr. Kolawole Sofola delivered closing remarks on behalf of ECOWAS leadership: “He highlighted the imperative for West Africa to leverage its natural resource base and transform raw commodities into competitive, value-added products.” He concluded by stating that AfCFTA is “a game changer for the economic and structural development of the African continent.”

With this launch, ECOWAS aims to help vulnerable member states make use of opportunities provided by AfCFTA through improved institutional frameworks.
