The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has launched the second phase of its Assistive Device Programme for Children with Disabilities in Guinea-Bissau. The initiative, implemented through the ECOWAS Directorate of Humanitarian and Social Affairs, is part of a regional effort to support the rights and dignity of children with disabilities. This aligns with ECOWAS Vision 2050 and the organization’s 4×4 Strategic Objectives.

The launch ceremony was held in Bissau and attended by senior officials, including H.E. Maria Inácia Có Mendes Sanhá, Minister of Women, Family and Social Solidarity for Guinea-Bissau. She expressed her gratitude for the programme during her remarks:

“This programme is not just about devices. It is about dignity. It is about telling our children that they matter, that their rightful place in society is non-negotiable. I thank ECOWAS for this act of humanity and for reminding us that true integration begins with the most vulnerable.”

She also highlighted the importance of inclusion as a central aspect of governance and called for ongoing collaboration to raise awareness around disability issues.

Dr. Alves D’Almada, Head of Social Affairs Division at ECOWAS Commission, spoke on behalf of the regional body:

“Beyond equipment, this mission empowers families, strengthens institutions, and promotes human dignity. We are here to build an inclusive future with the people of Guinea-Bissau.”

Mr. João Pedro Cabral, President of the National Federation of Associations for the Defence and Promotion of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, delivered a message emphasizing policy integration:

“It is our collective responsibility to ensure that every child with a disability is seen, heard and included. This initiative represents hope for thousands of families.”

The event gathered representatives from government ministries, civil society organizations, and local experts to discuss technical coordination and ensure cultural relevance in implementing the programme.

Before the launch event, ECOWAS delegates met with Minister Maria Inácia Có Mendes Sanhá to align strategies and reinforce national ownership over implementation efforts. The delegation also visited Mr. Julião Mané at Guinea-Bissau’s Permanent Representation to ECOWAS as part of ongoing multilateral cooperation between national authorities and regional bodies.

According to ECOWAS officials at the event, this programme represents not only a technical intervention but also an affirmation of shared values across West Africa regarding childhood inclusion and social cohesion.
