The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) commenced its 50th-anniversary celebrations in Praia, Cabo Verde, on May 26, 2025. The launch event gathered various dignitaries, including Mrs. Miryan Vieira, the Secretary of State of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of Cabo Verde; Mr. Francis Sempore, Acting Resident Representative of the ECOWAS Commission in Cabo Verde and Executive Director of ECREEE; and members from different sectors such as the diplomatic corps and ECOWAS officials.
Mr. Francis Sempore highlighted the significance of the anniversary in his keynote address: “this 50th anniversary is a remarkable milestone — a time not only for celebration but also for reflection. As we mark five decades of regional cooperation and solidarity, we must redouble our efforts to strengthen integration and foster collaboration for a brighter, united future in West Africa.”
Mrs. Miryan Vieira praised ECOWAS’s impact in Cabo Verde and emphasized that “ECREEE stands as a center of excellence and a point of reference in the promotion of sustainable energy in the region.” She advocated for a “people-centered approach” to regional integration focusing on human development.
The celebrations will continue with national and regional activities, including youth-focused programs, conferences on sustainable energy and maritime security. These initiatives underscore ECOWAS’s dedication to sustainable development and regional cooperation.
A press conference at the ECOWAS Representation in Praia preceded the event. Speakers included Mrs. Kelly Lopes, Political Adviser; Captain Seydina Djibril Mbengue; and Mr. Francis Sempore who discussed the importance of the anniversary.
As ECOWAS celebrates its golden jubilee, this year’s events aim to strengthen citizens’ connection to regional goals and encourage future generations to contribute to an integrated West Africa.
