The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Commission has launched a two-day training program for journalists and media professionals in Cabo Verde. The initiative is designed to enhance the ability of media practitioners to address challenges related to disinformation, misinformation, and harmful narratives within West Africa.
The event is organized by the ECOWAS Commission in partnership with the Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA) and receives support from the Government of Germany through Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ). The training focuses on improving skills in media and information literacy, fact-checking, responsible use of digital tools, and ethical journalism. These efforts aim to promote democracy, peace, security, and good governance across the region.
In her opening statement delivered on behalf of ECOWAS Commission, Mrs. Kelly Lopes, ECOWAS Resident Representative in Cabo Verde said: “Information integrity is essential to sustaining public trust and regional stability.” She also emphasized the importance of media as a foundation for democratic governance and social cohesion.
Mr. Joel AHOFODJI, Acting Director of Communication at the ECOWAS Commission, stated that: “The training seeks to strengthen journalists’ ability to deliver responsible, investigative and fact-based reporting, capable of countering disinformation and supporting peace and democratic values in West Africa.”
Ms. Isa Morais, Coordinator at the ECOWAS National Office in Cabo Verde added: “Journalists are key stakeholders in promoting balanced, ethical and responsible information ecosystem, both at national and regional levels,” referencing alignment with ECOWAS principles.
Representatives from GIZ and MFWA also addressed attendees. Mr. Seco Baldé from GIZ and Dr. Kojo Impraim representing MFWA reiterated their support for building a resilient media landscape consistent with ECOWAS Vision 2050 goals for a peaceful and integrated region.
This training forms part of ECOWAS’s broader objective to institutionalize information integrity as a strategic component of democratic governance by equipping journalists with necessary skills and standards. The program supports ongoing efforts toward fostering informed public dialogue as well as strengthening professional media systems throughout West Africa.
