The ECOWAS Commission has allocated a grant of $1,033,991 to 25 regional centers across West Africa. This initiative aims to train 3,142 young individuals in agroforestry, livestock, and fisheries sectors by integrating theoretical knowledge with practical skills. The program also emphasizes sustainable agricultural practices for small-scale producers and key value chain actors.
A regional workshop commenced on October 29, 2024, in Abuja, Nigeria. It focuses on reviewing training outcomes, identifying challenges, and aligning efforts with the ECOWAS strategy for youth employment in agricultural value chains. The event brings together center directors and trained participants.
H.E. Dr Omar Alieu Touray and H.E. Massandjé Touré-Litsé commended the dedication of center directors in equipping young people with essential skills for agriculture and related sectors. “The importance of these sectors in our region cannot be overstated,” stated Touré-Litsé.
Touré-Litsé highlighted the workshop’s goal to assess training programs and develop best practices for broader application. She emphasized the potential renewal of the program focusing on achieving greater impact.
“The potential of this initiative is vast,” she added, noting how modern technologies and sustainable practices have transformed local economies. She reaffirmed ECOWAS’s commitment to supporting youth empowerment across West Africa.
Participants are encouraged to engage in discussions fostering collaboration and innovation. “Let us seize this opportunity to refine our strategies,” concluded Touré-Litsé.
The workshop will feature presentations on the regional strategy for youth employability in relevant sectors by Mr Alain Sy Traoré, ECOWAS Director of Agriculture and Rural Development. Video reports from young participants will showcase their training outcomes.
