The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has made strides in regional integration and trade by hosting a capacity-building workshop for judicial officials of the ECOWAS Court of Justice. The two-day event took place on October 3-4, 2024, at the ECOWAS Commission Headquarters in Abuja. It focused on equipping judges, registrars, and legal officers with skills necessary to interpret dispute resolution mechanisms under both the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and ECOWAS frameworks.
Mr. Kolawole Sofola, Director of Trade at ECOWAS, emphasized the importance of the judiciary in maintaining legal frameworks essential for regional integration and trade liberalization. Speaking on behalf of Commissioner for Economic Affairs and Agriculture Madam Massandje Toure-Litse, Mr. Sofola noted that “the success of the Trade Agreement will require the ability to resolve trade disputes fairly and efficiently.”
Justice Sengu Mohamed Koroma from the ECOWAS Court praised efforts to enhance professional collaboration among institutions and member states for AfCFTA adoption. He highlighted how synergy between AfCFTA and existing ECOWAS frameworks has facilitated free movement across regions. Justice Koroma also pointed out that AfCFTA’s Dispute Settlement Mechanism offers various resolution options such as adjudication, mediation, and arbitration.
Professor Mohammed Ladan from Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies underscored AfCFTA’s comprehensive agreement covering areas like trade, investment, intellectual property, competition, digital trade, gender, and youth inclusion. He commended ECOWAS for leading Africa’s regional economic bodies in collaboration efforts necessary for legal clarity.
This initiative underscores ECOWAS’ dedication to enhancing intra-regional trade capabilities while ensuring West Africa remains competitive globally through robust legal frameworks supporting economic integration.
