Nigeria’s former Vice-President, Dr. Namadi Sambo, has arrived in Accra as the Head of the 120-member ECOWAS Long- and Short-Term Election Observation Mission for Ghana’s elections scheduled on December 7, 2024. Accompanying him is Deputy Head of Mission Baboucarr Blaise Jagne, Gambia’s former Foreign Minister.

Dr. Sambo was welcomed by Amb. Abdel-Fatau Musah, Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security of the ECOWAS Commission, who leads an ECOWAS Electoral Technical Support Team. Also present were Amb. Mohammed Lawan Gana, Resident Representative of ECOWAS in Ghana, and Ambassador Dayo Adeoye, High Commissioner of Nigeria to Ghana.

The deployment of election observers by Dr. Omar Alieu Touray, President of the ECOWAS Commission, aligns with the regional Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance to assist Member States conducting elections.

In July, an ECOWAS Fact-finding mission led by Ambassador Abdel-Fatau Musah visited Ghana to evaluate preparations for the upcoming presidential and parliamentary elections.

Ghana’s electorate consists of 18,774,259 registered voters from a population estimated at 34.42 million. They will vote to elect a new president and members for a 276-seat Parliament in what will be Ghana’s ninth series of elections since returning to multiparty democracy in 1992.

Upon his arrival in Accra, Dr. Sambo urged all stakeholders and especially the two main political parties “to ensure peaceful and credible presidential and parliamentary elections in Ghana on 7th December 2024” to further bolster Ghana’s democratic traditions.
