The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Mediation and Security Council is convening its 54th Ordinary Session at the ministerial level in Abuja, Nigeria. The meeting, held on June 18, 2025, focuses on several critical issues affecting the region.

Ministers are reviewing the report from the 42nd Session of the MSC at the Ambassadorial Level. They are also discussing memoranda related to political, security, and humanitarian challenges within West Africa. Topics include transitions in Guinea, negotiations with Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger, as well as maritime security and counterterrorism efforts.

H.E. Dr. Omar Alieu Touray, President of the ECOWAS Commission, addressed attendees by acknowledging that this session coincides with ECOWAS’s 50th anniversary. He praised member states for their dedication to regional peace and stability despite ongoing challenges. “For over 25 years,” he stated, “the Mediation and Security Council has contributed immensely to the security and stability of our region.”

Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar of Nigeria chaired the session. He welcomed delegates and emphasized their commitment to strengthening peace and democratic governance in West Africa. He noted progress on regional priorities such as political transitions and maritime security.

Ambassador Tuggar highlighted advancements like Early Warning and Response Centres and the completion of a military logistics depot in Lungi. He warned against policies that could restrict trade or investment opportunities essential for regional prosperity.

“In these challenging times,” he remarked, “our ability to come together to consult, collaborate and take decisive action remains vital to advancing peace.”

A report will be adopted by ministers at the conclusion of this session. It will be presented during the Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Council of Ministers scheduled for June 19-20 in Abuja.
