ECOWAS Commission president meets with Mexican ambassador and Irish minister in Abuja

The President of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Commission, Dr. Omar Alieu Touray, held meetings on March 18 with Alfredo Miranda, Ambassador of Mexico, and Jack Chambers, Ireland’s Minister for Public Expenditure, Infrastructure, Public Service Reform, and Digitalization at the ECOWAS Commission Headquarters in Abuja.

These meetings are part of Dr. Touray’s ongoing diplomatic efforts to strengthen regional cooperation and deepen bilateral relations with international partners. The discussions focused on expanding collaboration between ECOWAS and both Mexico and Ireland in areas such as economic cooperation, trade, public sector reform, infrastructure development, and digital transformation.

During his meeting with Ambassador Miranda at the end of his mandate, Dr. Touray explored ways to increase cooperation between ECOWAS and Mexico. Both parties discussed opportunities for economic partnership and emphasized the importance of fostering mutually beneficial relationships that support regional development.

In talks with Minister Chambers, attention was given to potential cooperation in governance innovation and knowledge exchange between ECOWAS Member States, Ireland, and the European Union. The dialogue highlighted how Ireland’s experience could help improve institutional efficiency within West Africa.

Dr. Touray said: “The ECOWAS Commission’s commitment to promoting regional integration, peace, and security remains strong while strengthening collaboration with both Member States and international partners.” He also said: “He emphasized the strategic importance of sustained diplomatic engagement in addressing shared challenges and unlocking new opportunities for development across West Africa.”

According to the official website, ECOWAS seeks to advance cooperation among member states through harmonized policies in trade, transport, agriculture, and social development to boost living standards and promote stability. The organization runs programs aimed at 12 West African countries but works toward extending its efforts across the broader region according to the official website. Looking ahead, Dr. Touray reaffirmed that ECOWAS will continue engaging global partners as it pursues its mandate for economic integration and prosperity throughout West Africa.
