The Honourable Minister of Foreign Affairs of Nigeria, Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, who also serves as the Chair of the ECOWAS Mediation and Security Council at the ministerial level, has urged for collective action and regional cooperation to address security challenges in West Africa. This call was made during the 53rd Ordinary Session of the Council held on December 11, 2024, in Abuja, Nigeria.
Minister Tuggar acknowledged the efforts by ECOWAS Commission and Member States in combating terrorism, violent extremism, organized crime, and natural disasters. He emphasized that shared responsibility is crucial for political stability in West Africa. “Political stability is the bedrock of sustainable development and regional integration,” he stated.
He congratulated Ghana on its successful presidential and parliamentary elections on December 7, 2024, which were deemed free and fair. Senegal was also praised for its smooth legislative elections.
President of the ECOWAS Commission, Dr Omar Alieu Touray, echoed similar sentiments regarding successful elections as a sign of possible change. Despite current challenges, he affirmed that “ECOWAS remains a success story.” He highlighted achievements such as economic integration and mutual support through infrastructure development and security interventions.
Dr Touray proposed a Summit of the Future to rethink community values and address issues protecting people and institutions. He stressed strengthening trust in state and regional institutions.
Leonardo Santos Simão from UNOWAS expressed support for ECOWAS’s efforts in consolidating democracy and addressing peace challenges. He reiterated UNOWAS’s commitment to supporting national and regional efforts for peace and stability.
The session’s agenda includes discussions on political, security, humanitarian situations in West Africa; establishment of early warning centers; creation of a Special Tribunal for The Gambia; money laundering prevention; among other topics.
The Mediation and Security Council consists of ministers responsible for Foreign Affairs and Defence from ECOWAS Member States. It plays a key role in conflict prevention at the regional level.
