The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has officially commenced the construction of a bridge over the Cavally River, marking a significant step in enhancing infrastructure between Côte d’Ivoire and Liberia. The site handover to the contractor and supervising consultant took place on October 3, 2024, at the Prollo border. This project is expected to last 24 months and aligns with ECOWAS’s Vision 2050 goals to boost regional trade, transport connectivity, and economic cooperation across West Africa.
Mr. Chris Appiah, Acting Director of Transport for the ECOWAS Commission, spoke on behalf of President Dr. Alieu Touray Omar during the ceremony. He emphasized that “the 288-meter Bridge over the Cavally River is more than just an infrastructure project—it is a gateway to economic transformation for Liberia, Côte d’Ivoire, and the entire West African region.” The bridge aims to improve trade routes, reduce transportation costs, and create jobs.
In Tabou, Côte d’Ivoire, Mme Kouakou Kalidja Epse Kouame, Prefect of Tabou, welcomed the ECOWAS delegation. She stated that “the Cavally River Bridge will enhance trade and transport for our people and the region as a whole.” She highlighted its potential to boost local economic activities and facilitate cross-border cooperation.
Henry Cole Jr., Superintendent of Maryland County in Liberia, also underscored the project’s significance: “This bridge represents more than a physical connection; it symbolizes economic growth and collaboration for Liberia and Côte d’Ivoire.”
ECOWAS Project Manager Engr. Ashoke Maliki detailed that the bridge will be a two-lane reinforced concrete cablestay structure designed to withstand environmental challenges. Plans include setting up a temporary construction camp with material logistics through San Pedro Port. The contractor committed to completing within 24 months.
A groundbreaking ceremony is planned for November 2024 with President H.E. Dr. Omar Alieu Touray expected to preside over it.
