As part of the 4th edition of the Agricultural Innovation and Technology Market (MITA) held from October 21 to 25, 2024, in Lomé, Togolese Republic, the ECOWAS Commission recognized agricultural innovations carried out by women in West Africa. The event was organized by the West and Central African Council for Agricultural Research and Development (CORAF) and supports the first edition of the Abdoulaye TOURE Agricultural Innovation Award. This award is backed by CORAF, ECOWAS, ECCAS, and the World Bank.

Mr. Alain Sy TRAORE, Director of Agriculture and Rural Development at ECOWAS Commission, stated that MITA provides an opportunity to celebrate women who contribute innovative solutions to challenges in agriculture. “Through this distinction,” he said, “ECOWAS recognizes the significant contribution of women in the research sector to the transformation of agriculture and food security in West Africa.” He encouraged recipients to continue their dedication to research and uphold Abdoulaye TOURE’s ideals. Traoré also called on regional organizations and partners to support institutionalizing this prize.

Awards were given following a competitive process conducted by an international committee established by CORAF. The winners included Mrs. SAMBOU Nadine from Senegal with her “Automatic Connected Solar Composter,” Mrs. Ndeye Amy KEBE from Senegal with her “JOKALANTE Platform,” and Mrs. MOUNJOUENPOU Pauline for her work on “Valorization of cassava peelings as a biopesticide.” Each received USD 10,000 for research activities, a trophy, and support for attending the award ceremony.

The Abdoulaye TOURE Agricultural Innovation Prize aims to honor Mr. Abdoulaye TOURÉ’s legacy—an advocate for agricultural research in Africa—and supports his vision of improving farmers’ livelihoods through innovations.

Representing ECOWAS at MITA 2024 were Mr. Alain Sy TRAORE and Mr Septime HOUSSOU-GOE.
