The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), through its Directorate of Humanitarian and Social Affairs, in partnership with Togo’s Ministry of Social Action, Solidarity and the Advancement of Women, organized a national capacity-building workshop in Lomé. This event took place from May 20 to 22, 2025, at Hôtel Concorde. It focused on enhancing the monitoring and accountability mechanisms for the Women, Peace and Security (WPS) agenda using the Continental Results Framework (CRC).
This initiative aligns with ECOWAS’ efforts to aid Member States in strengthening their data-based monitoring systems as part of UN Security Council Resolution 1325. The training is supported by the ECOWAS Peace, Security and Governance Project (EPSG), funded by the European Union and Germany’s BMZ.
Mr. Olatunde Olayemi from ECOWAS emphasized Togolese women and girls’ roles in peace and social cohesion during his opening speech. He noted that this training would improve documentation of their contributions both nationally and regionally.
Ms. Camilla Gendolla from the German Embassy highlighted Germany’s support for inclusive peace-building through a feminist development policy. She stressed using the CRC as a practical tool for institutions to ensure accountability.
Representing Togo’s Minister for Social Action, Mr. Yodo Phillipe expressed gratitude towards EC-WEAO and partners while reaffirming Togo’s commitment to gender equality in development policies related to peace and security.
Over 30 participants were trained in using the CRC tool for better monitoring related to WPS indicators. At the workshop’s conclusion, five gender evaluation reports were presented to ECOWAS’ Resident Representative in Togo.
Ms. Tamwakat Elizabeth Golit from ECOWAS outlined recommendations for improved coordination based on these reports available online on the ECOWAS website.
Mr. Jérôme Wanyou Ouraga conveyed support for integrating these findings into national policies while encouraging further research based on them.
Participants advocated for strengthened institutional collaboration, continued training, and integrating CRC tools into national systems long-term. They committed to contributing to Togo’s annual WPS report using simplified CRC tools.
This event marks the seventh such workshop by ECOWAS following others held across various West African countries as part of implementing regional frameworks.
