On February 18, 2025, the Environment, Natural Resources and Planning Portfolio (ENRP) received a shipment of 1,000 Dekalb-Amberlink breed day-old chicks. This import was essential to fulfill existing orders for chicks that were not met with the initial batch brought in during 2023.

The chicks have been quarantined for four weeks as per biosecurity protocols and will be available for sale to egg producers on Wednesday, March 19, 2025. Priority for these chicks has been given to commercial producers to complete their orders. Smallholders who requested ten or more chicks will receive their full requirements.

Each chick is priced at £3.00, with ENRP providing a 50% subsidy to cover importation and quarantine costs. These measures aim to boost local fresh egg supply self-sufficiency and promote local production, ensuring the community’s access to fresh produce.

However, some producers will not receive any chicks from this consignment. The ENRP is considering another import later this year to meet outstanding orders and invite further applications. The timing of future imports will depend on supplier availability, seasonality, and on-island feed supply considerations. ENRP plans to reach out to the affected applicants.
