On June 10, 2025, Mr. Wang Peng, the new Chinese Commercial and Economic Counsellor, visited Mr. Sheku Ahmed Fantamadi Bangura, the Minister of Finance of Sierra Leone. The meeting was also attended by Mr. Samuel E.B. Momoh, Principal Deputy Financial Secretary, and Dr. Franklin Sisabu Bendu, Technical Adviser to the Minister.
Mr. Wang expressed his gratitude to the Minister for receiving him and stated that his visit aimed to enhance bilateral cooperation between China and Sierra Leone.
The Minister welcomed Mr. Peng to Sierra Leone and noted that the government has maintained a positive relationship with the Chinese Embassy in Freetown to advance the country’s development goals. He thanked China for its continued support in promoting Sierra Leone’s economic aspirations and expressed a desire to strengthen this mutually beneficial economic relationship.
The Minister requested Mr. Peng’s assistance in ensuring Sierra Leone can effectively access grant resources pledged by China. He also called for establishing an effective currency swap arrangement to facilitate trade between the two countries.
Mr. Peng committed to becoming a key facilitator in enhancing economic cooperation between China and Sierra Leone.
