China hosts African first ladies for women’s empowerment through education conference

First Lady Mrs. Kartumu Y. Boakai of Liberia joined her African counterparts at the Women’s Empowerment Through Education Meeting hosted by China’s First Lady, Dr. Peng Liyuan, on September 5, 2024. The event took place on the sidelines of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation in Beijing.

Dr. Peng Liyuan underscored the significance of women’s education and the mutual objectives of China and Africa in promoting this cause to ensure a brighter future. She acknowledged the significant contributions made by Chinese and African women through their hard work, wisdom, and dedication.

Marie Khone Faye, wife of Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, expressed gratitude to Dr. Peng for her efforts in advancing the education of African girls and women. The longstanding support from China in related fields was also recognized during the event.

The conference included various cultural activities such as children’s singing, Peking Opera performances, and an exhibition showcasing China’s traditional culture and achievements in women’s education.

The attending First Ladies reiterated their commitment to education and shared values aimed at empowering women in their respective countries. Mrs. Boakai expressed her appreciation for the invitation and emphasized her intention to amplify the voices of Liberian women and girls for economic empowerment.

The Women’s Empowerment Through Education Conference facilitated stronger ties between China and African nations in their joint efforts to advance women’s education and empowerment.
