China has donated a new car to the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Commission, marking an ongoing partnership between China and the regional body. The handover took place on December 4, 2025, in Abuja, Nigeria, during a visit by the Chinese ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS.
The donation is described as both symbolic and diplomatic, representing closer cooperation between Beijing and ECOWAS. It comes amid broader collaboration that includes significant infrastructure projects. Among these is the construction of a new headquarters for ECOWAS institutions in Abuja. The building project, known as the “Eye of West Africa,” began in November 2022 and is expected to be completed by January 2026. The facility is funded through a grant from China via the China International Development Cooperation Agency (China Aid).
Dr. Omar Alieu Touray, President of the ECOWAS Commission, said: “The new headquarters of the community institutions will increase staff productivity and reduce operational costs, given that the Commission currently operates from different locations in Abuja.”
Both Dr. Touray and the Chinese ambassador highlighted strong relations between China and West Africa and committed to strengthening them further. The Chinese diplomat stated his country’s intent to support unity, peace, and economic development within West Africa, with an emphasis on integration and infrastructure advancement across Africa.
During their meeting, the two leaders discussed challenges facing regional development as well as efforts aimed at supporting peace, unity, and security in West Africa. Dr. Touray also raised with his guest the issue of permanent African representation on the United Nations Security Council.
The meeting concluded with an exchange of gifts between Dr. Touray and the Chinese ambassador as a gesture of appreciation for their ongoing cooperation.
