HM Customs and Immigration on St Helena is set to begin a six-week intensive training program as part of its agreement with the British Indian Ocean Territory Migrant Agreement MOU. Scheduled to commence on April 28, 2025, the program will aim to boost the capabilities of the local Customs and Immigration Section.
A team of four experts from Border Force UK will lead the program, which is designed to address St Helena’s specific needs and challenges. It will focus on enhancing the skills and knowledge of the local personnel to improve the efficiency of the island’s border control operations.
Operational hours for HM Customs and Immigration may be adjusted due to the training. Temporary office closures or reduced services could occur, although the team intends to minimize disruptions and keep the public informed about any changes in advance. Occasionally, last-minute closures might be unavoidable.
Head of Customs and Immigration, Owen Birkby stated: “This training represents a significant opportunity for St Helena. The skills and knowledge gained from this collaboration with Border Force UK will directly contribute to the enhancement of our Customs and Immigration services, ensuring we can continue to effectively manage our borders and serve our community. While there may be short-term discomfort associated with the intensive nature of the training, these efforts will reap long-term benefits for the island’s security and prosperity.”
The Customs and Immigration Section requests the public’s understanding and cooperation during the training period and promises to keep disruptions to a minimum.
