The first edition of the new vegetarian magazine, Health Africa, was released this month in the Ghana market to spread information and positive feelings about vegetarianism.
The magazine, which is written in both English and French, seeks to demystify individual perception and misconception about vegetarianism using a plant-based diet. The magazine is an 80-page bilingual quarterly publication featuring some prominent Ghanaians who are self-sufficient with plant-based diets.
Kofi Asare, president of the Vegetarian Association of Ghana, said the magazine has gathered researched information put together to dispel lies peddled against people on vegetarian diets. He said “vegetarianism is beyond a meatless diet, adding that protein can even be obtained from tomatoes, beans and corn produced organically, which contains 15 percent of protein.”
The
magazine’s editor-in-chief, Nana Otu Mensah, said the magazine seeks to teach a healthy lifestyle. According to him, most public discussions on the topic of vegetarianism avoid the potentially positive impacts of a plant-based diet on hypertension, diabetes and many more health problems.
