In a ceremonial address, President Adama Barrow reaffirmed his government’s commitment to reparations for victims and survivors of past human rights violations in The Gambia. The speech took place during the swearing-in ceremony of the Commissioners of the Reparations Commission at the State House. During the event, President Barrow acknowledged the findings of the Truth, Reconciliation, and Reparations Commission (TRRC), which investigated human rights violations from 1994 to 2017.

“Following the submission of the TRRC’s Report, my government committed itself to ensuring that all persons responsible for the reported wrongs and crimes be either removed from office, banned from holding public office, or prosecuted in accordance with the law,” Barrow said, reinforcing his government’s resolve to address past injustices.

President Barrow emphasized reparation as a moral and legal obligation, stating, “The issue of reparation remains one of my government’s highest priorities on our transitional justice programme. We strongly believe that reparation is a moral and legal obligation, based on the principles of justice and fairness.”

Addressing the Commissioners, Barrow expressed confidence in the newly established Commission, highlighting the significant task entrusted to them. “The task ahead is huge, and it means a lot not only for the victims and survivors but also for the entire nation.”

The President also revealed financial measures in support of the reparations process. “As evidence of this, I am pleased to disclose that my administration will commit funds annually to the Reparations Fund.”

Barrow urged the nation and victims to support the Commission, stating, “Consequently, my government will do its best to address your plight. To guarantee their success, I urge you to rally behind the Commission and its leadership.”

Concluding his address, Barrow wished for the success of the Commission and emphasized the hope that future commissions investigating such violations would be unnecessary. “While wishing the Commission resounding success, I pray that we never again have the cause to set up any Commission like the TRRC or this Reparations Commission.”

The ceremony marked a step forward in The Gambia’s journey towards healing and accountability for past grievances.
