The African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM), in collaboration with the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), is set to conduct a three-day technical training workshop in Monrovia. The event, which will take place from September 10 to 12, 2025, at the Cape Hotel, aims to introduce and explain the revised APRM Country Self-Assessment Questionnaire and research methodology.

The main objective of the workshop is to provide national research groups, think tanks, and stakeholders with comprehensive knowledge of the updated research approach. This methodology is crucial for Liberia’s upcoming national survey and research efforts that will result in the Country Self-Assessment Report (CSAR). The CSAR acts as a foundational document for Liberia’s second-generation country review.

This initiative forms part of Liberia’s review Roadmap and supports APRM’s wider goal to improve governance, accountability, and peer learning among African Union member states. The APRM was established in 2003 as a specialized institution within the AU framework to encourage voluntary self-assessment among its members.

In 2016, the APRM Forum of Heads of State and Government adopted an agenda focused on revitalizing the review process by making it more inclusive and thorough.

According to organizers, “The workshop will focus on: popularizing the Revised Country Self-Assessment Base Questionnaire and its annexed toolkits; training national structures and technical institutions to deconstruct and domesticate the questionnaire; building capacity for the effective use of the APRM electronic questionnaire; and providing a platform for member states to share best practices and experiences in the domestication process.”

Experience sharing sessions are planned with representatives from Ghana’s and Nigeria’s national APRM structures. Participants expected at the workshop include representatives from government ministries such as Foreign Affairs and Finance and Development Planning, as well as members of civil society organizations, independent think tanks, youth groups, media outlets, development partners, research institutes, National Governing Council (NGC), and APRM National Secretariat.
