The African Bar Association (AfBA) has expressed support for President Julius Maada Bio of Sierra Leone in his role as ECOWAS Chairman, highlighting his leadership during a period of significant regional challenges. In a letter signed by AfBA President High Chief Ibrahim Eddie Mark, the association acknowledged the difficulties facing ECOWAS as Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso move forward with their withdrawal from the bloc to strengthen cooperation within the Alliance of Sahel States (AES).
AfBA praised President Bio’s approach to addressing these issues. “The withdrawal of Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso from ECOWAS, if not properly handled, will jeopardize decades of hard-earned progress in regional unity, economic cooperation, and security,” AfBA wrote, urging him to focus on negotiation rather than measures that could further isolate the Sahel nations.
While reiterating its opposition to unconstitutional changes of government, AfBA cautioned against sanctions that might harm citizens. “We cannot condone military takeovers; however, punishing the people of these countries with blanket sanctions only deepens the divide and worsens insecurity,” the letter stressed.
The association encouraged continued efforts at inclusive dialogue. “The crisis in the Sahel calls for statesmanship and constructive dialogue, not measures that entrench bitterness and undermine the well-being of citizens,” AfBA noted.
AfBA also stated its willingness to assist ECOWAS under President Bio’s leadership. “As the African Bar Association, we stand prepared to support mediation efforts and provide legal and advisory backing to strengthen the rule of law and good governance in the region,” it said.
By supporting President Bio’s commitment to engagement over isolation and offering assistance for mediation efforts, AfBA signaled its interest in promoting unity and stability within West Africa.
