The St Helena Veterans Association (SHVA) organized a series of events to mark the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe (VE) Day. The commemorations aimed to honor the sacrifices and contributions of both international and local heroes who contributed to the Allied victory in Europe.
The day began with readings of the Proclamation outside The Canister by Cllr Robert Midwinter and David Harding, recalling the historic announcement that marked the end of World War II in Europe. Later, a main service was held at the Cenotaph, led by Bishop Dale. Attendees observed a two-minute silence and laid wreaths as a mark of respect for those who served. In the evening, church bells rang out across St Helena, reminiscent of the celebrations in 1945. High Knoll Fort was illuminated in red, white, and blue as a visual tribute.
In London, representatives from SHG UK attended a service at Westminster Abbey and a concert at Horse Guards Parade.
These events reflect St Helena’s dedication to remembering World War II's impact and recognizing collective efforts toward peace. The program highlighted both VE Day's global significance and St Helenians' unique contributions.
Joshua Deville, Chairman of SHVA, remarked: “Yesterday marked the national and international commemoration of this very important date in our memories and our calendars...”
He added: “It was very heart-warming to see our communities across St Helena come together to pay their respects...”
Deville also expressed gratitude on behalf of SHVA: “I would like to convey my sincere thanks...to all who supported us in bringing this event to life.”
