African officials meet again to discuss border-management efforts

Officials from the African Union Border Program (AUBP) held a meeting recently in Lusaka, Zambia, with the Regional Economic Communities (RECs) to coordinate border-management efforts.

An earlier meeting on the same topic was held in Abuja, Nigeria.

Officials at the Zambia meeting discussed the development of a process for RECs to communicate with one another and the AUBP about initiatives and programs related to border management.
Officials are urging AUC nations to put programs in place at the regional level that can be shared across the continent.

Those at the meeting also reviewed and reworked the AUBP-RECs Joint Roadmap for Border Management, which went into effect in 2013. They also compiled a report about what is being done at all of Africa's borders and discussed possible cross-border collaborations.
Information from the meeting will be shared at the 15th session of the African Ministerial Conference, which is set to take place in March 2016.
