Nigerian President Muhammad Buhari recently thanked Akintola Williams for his ongoing contributions to the nation’s development.

The praise came as the 2015 Akintola Williams Distinguished Lecture Series kicked off. The lecture series is held in honor of the 96-year-old Nigerian, who was the first African to qualify as a chartered accountant.

Williams also was instrumental in founding the Nigerian Stock Exchange and the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria.

Buhari also saluted the organizers of the lecture series, which encourages professionalism, integrity and sound corporate governance throughout the nation.

This year’s theme was “Leadership Factors And Good Corporate Governance – Key to National Growth and Development."

As Buhari prepares to launch a new Federal Executive Council, he said this year's lecture series is especially timely. The council will be charged with implementing the Buhari administration’s agenda for a national renaissance.
