Nigerian official calls for more public, private support for Youth Service Corps

Rabi Shuaibu Jimeta, permanent secretary of Nigeria's Federal Ministry of Youth Development, is urging generous individuals, corporations and philanthropic organizations nationwide to follow the lead of the National Youth Corps Foundation and help the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) achieve its mission to promote national unity and cultural integration in the country.

Jimeta issued the challenge late last week from her office in Abuja, Nigeria, while welcoming six members of the NYSC Foundation Board of Trustees for a visit. Jimeta also praised the foundation for its many good works.

Jimeta said the cost of operating the foundation continues to rise and called for more support from Nigeria's citizens, businesses and other organizations.

Jimeta also pledged the ministry’s support and encouragement to the foundation.

NYSC Chairman Abubakar Abdullahi said the reason for the visit to the ministry was to re-establish contact with officials and make an appeal for support for the foundation.

Abdullahi said the foundation soon will host a fundraising dinner to raise money for loans that will be awarded to ex-corps members who present solid business plans who have the desire to become self-employed.
