ECOWAS and Algeria Agree to Regular Discussions on Political and Security Situation in West Africa and the Sahel

ECOWAS and Algeria have agreed to hold regular discussions on the political and security situation in West Africa and the Sahel, as well as the plight of irregular migrants. This commitment was announced by H.E. Dr Omar Alieu Touray, President of the ECOWAS Commission, and H.E. Ahmed ATTAF, Algerian Minister of Foreign Affairs and the National Community Abroad, following their meeting in Algiers on April 23-26, 2024.

During the meeting, Dr Omar Alieu Touray expressed his satisfaction at the willingness and commitment of the Algerian authorities to contribute to resolving the problems and challenges facing the West African region and the Sahel. The discussions between the two parties allowed for the sharing of views and analyses on political and security developments in the region, and explored ways to enhance coordination in addressing the common challenges faced by the countries and peoples in the region.

As a result of the meeting, ECOWAS and Algeria have agreed to have regular engagements and coordinate efforts to find solutions to the political and security crises in the region. Additionally, they have committed to maintaining fraternal relations and mutual commitments.

Furthermore, Algeria has shown readiness to engage with ECOWAS on proposals aimed at facilitating the safe and humane repatriation of irregular immigrants from its territory back to their countries of origin, as expressed by H.E. Ahmed ATTAF.

The collaboration between ECOWAS and Algeria signifies a step towards addressing the complex political, security, and migration challenges in West Africa and the Sahel region through ongoing dialogue and joint efforts.
