President Adama Barrow announced the commissioning of a new 23 Mega Watts Solar plant in Jambur in February, a culmination of the project which was started in 2023.

Barrow initiated the beginning of the Jambur Solar Plant Project in 2023 to revolutionize the electricity sector and address the history of electricity challenges in the nation.

Since Barrow took office in 2017, Gambia and its government have struggled with providing adequate and reliable electricity across the country. In some cases, there was a complete absence of electricity available.

The Barrow administration announced national development of electricity as a top priority, working with organizations like the World Bank, The European Union, and the European Investment Bank to realize their goals.

The Gambia Renewable Energy Project, also known as The Gambia Electricity Restoration and Modernisation Project (GERMP), has four main parts. A solar photovoltaic plant with a total installed capacity of 23 Mega Watts and a battery energy storage system, overhaul improvements and expansion of the national grid, institutional support, and on-grid and off-grid battery systems for critical institutions like schools and health centers.
