President Bola Tinubu has announced the opening of both land and air borders between Nigeria and the Republic of Niger. Other sanctions against the country will also be lifted.

The announcement, made on March 13, lifted several sanctions with immediate effect. Decisions to do so were made at the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS)  ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government meeting on February 24, 2024, held in Abuja.

Leaders at the ECOWAS meeting agreed to lift the economic sanctions that were held against the Republic of Niger, Mali, Burkina Faso, and Guinea.

The sanctions lifted included the closure of borders and a no-fly zone on all commercial flights to and from Niger Republic, the suspension of all transactions between Nigeria and Niger. Other ECOWAS sanctions included the freezing of Niger’s assets in the ECOWAS Central Bank and their suspension from financial assistance. There were also travel bans on government officials and family members.

President Tinubu also approved lifting the financial and economic sanctions against the Republic of Guinea, according to his announcement.
