Twenty students graduated from Pan African University's Institute for Life and Earth Sciences (including Health and Agriculture) on Tuesday in Ibadan, Nigeria.
The graduates came from eight African nations and earned master's degrees in environmental management, plant breeding and reproductive health sciences. The group graduated with students from the host university, the University of Ibadan.
The convocation address was given by Professor Yemi Osinbajo, vice president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, who said Nigeria would continue to be a part of the university and that the entire Pan African University effort, which was shepherded by the African Union, has been a success.
Osinbajo told the graduates that the future of the continent would rely on their "creativity and character," and urged them to always keep abreast of developments in African globalization and growth.
The graduation ceremony was led by the Sultan of Sokoto, His Eminence Alhaji Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar III, the new chancellor of the University of Ibadan.
The new chancellor encouraged officials within Africa's university system to think about ways to bring peace to the continent.
Pan African University was formed in an effort to boost Africa's science, technology and innovation
sectors. The first group of students from the university, which was launched by the African Union, graduated a year ago from the school's Institute for Basic Sciences, Technology and Innovation in Kenya.
